My Students

Do you remember when having a paper portfolio landed you a job or acceptance into a university? Oh, have times changed. Paper portfolios are a thing of the past and the wonderful world of technology is the future for the young people I teach.

I teach high school students with special needs.

My students are high functioning, but have difficulty staying focused and have various learning disabilities. My students struggle when they have to organize their materials and prepare for life after high school. As their teacher, I assist them with creating an electronic portfolio. This portfolio will be a work in progress throughout their high school years. Because I am fortunate enough to have my students for four years, I am able to monitor their progress and assist them to update their electronic portfolio on a regular basis. This in turn will help them have a central location for important documents, work samples, and resumes for when they are applying for college and/or jobs.

My Project

If my students have the ability to save their word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and various work samples on one flash drive that they are able to use in my classroom they have a sense of ownership of their material. This is because they are giving the freedom to be independent. Also, if my students have access to a portable scanner they will be able to scan different tests and quizzes that they did well on and want to show off in their electronic portfolio. If these resources are easily available my students will be able to produce quality work that will help prepare them to become productive citizens after high school.

This project is important because the basic electronic resources such as a flash drive and portable scanner are not readily available to my students.

Unfortunately, we do not have access to these types of materials that would help my students become learners of the 21st century. Please help move my students into the 21st century!
