My Students
I am very fortunate to teach the students of this community. They are motivated, inquisitive, and really enjoy collaborating when given a project. Over the past year, parents have generously donated towards my vision of introducing STEM-based chemistry and biology labs involving amazing technology that is used to gather data.
The students appreciate the opportunity to use the STEM lab equipment because it allows them to use technology while collaborating and using critical thinking to produce results which help prepare them for the future.
My Project
This year I am including electrochemistry into my curriculum because this topic is discussed in AP physics and AP chemistry. Needless to say, it sounds like a complicated discussion so I strongly believe that a high level inquiry based project will help the students learn the basics and build confidence.
Students will learn how metals can vary in chemical activity and test combinations of metals to produce voltaic and electrochemical cells.
Using the cell with the highest voltage output, they will power various electrical devices and an electrolytic cell for extracting elements and plating metals. They investigate variables that could affect the voltage and amperage of their voltaic cell. If we had three kits, then the students will have enough materials to make this a very meaningful experience.
