Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban public school with over 1,000 students. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. There are over 15 different languages spoken in the homes of our students, including Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, and Vietnamese. Over 60% of our students’ homes do not speak English as their primary language and 25% of our student population receives ESL services.
Our middle school is classified as a Title I school and over 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is part of the District Reference Group "H," which is the second-lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. Despite these economic barriers, our students strive for academic achievement. Our school community promotes our unique diversity and encourages students to reach their maximum learning potential.
My Project
As a teacher, I understand the importance of efficiency in the classroom. In order for my students to be successful in the classroom, they need to have the resources and supplies readily available to complete our activities.
The resources requested in this project will help to make our classroom even more efficient and productive.
My students will use the headphone splitters to collaborate with peers while watching historical videos and while completing groups projects. The headphone splitters allow multiple students (up to 5) to listen to the video/activity at the same time. Students love using the splitters we currently have and these additional splitters will provide more of my students with an opportunity to access them.
My students will use the Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries as a desk resource in the classroom. Many of my students are currently learning the English language and often need resources to support their understanding of Social Studies content and/or English words. These dictionaries will make support more readily available for my students.
Finally, I will use the supply caddies to better organize our classroom resources (pens, pencils, paper clips, scissors, highlighters, etc.) so that they are readily accessible. This will help to create a more productive and efficient classroom!
