Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a public middle school serving roughly 390 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community, as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 90 percent Latino, and roughly 60 percent of our students are English learners. In addition, nearly 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. To add to the challenges this year, our school is located in a neighborhood with disproportionately high COVID positive rates.

Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and up lifting.

Our students work hard and they are eager and excited to learn.

My Project

This has been a strange school year to say the least! There are so many little things that make learning in our current environment just a little bit better. I am requesting rewards and incentives, new classroom headphones and storage, as well as some necessities like hand sanitizer and kleenex

My classroom currently shares headphones with another classroom and it would be great to have our own (to cut down on logistics and sanitation time), as well as a stand to keep them organized.

In addition, incentives such as erasers and candy are super helpful to keep kids motivated to read our new books - can't get enough Dog Man!

Given our current times, we are in continuous need of sanitizer that doesn't smell awful (yay GermEx!), Kleenex, and paper towels. And lastly organizing all of the stuff in a classroom is never-ending and I continue to try to master it, these drawers and containers will help!
