I am a middle school Special Education teacher. My unique population of students sometimes requires unique and different ways to learn, especially when it comes to subjects like science and history that can be in-depth, complex, and difficult to comprehend. Examples include: 1) The game Genotype will help students learn how to collect data that can be used to control how plants inherit traits (e.g. seed shape, flower color, stem color, & plant height). Furthermore, it will expose them to key genetic vocabulary, such as trait, inheritance, phenotype, & genotype. It will also teach some history about Gregor Mendel. 2) In the game Ecosystem, students will build unique ecological networks using organism & environment cards. The more biodiversity, the more points they will score. The goal will be to balance delicate connections between all living things. Additionally, students will be exposed to key biological vocabulary. 3) The game Cytosis will teach students about human cell biology. It will show them how the human cell functions by learning how genetic codons are translated from mRNA to protein by ribosome translocation & creating enzymes, hormones, & hormone receptors. Again, students will learn key cell biology vocabulary.
These educational board games will give my students fun, hands-on opportunities to learn about science and history in a small group setting.
Additionally, since the pandemic, I've noticed that a lot of my students have really shown a deficit and/or regression in their social interaction skills. Beyond the subject content, it will help my students develop their social interaction skills and sportsmanship. This will also be a fun approach to reading as they play through the cards and other aspects of gameplay. These games will provide the alternative & non-traditional ways of learning that students with disabilities sometimes require. Thank you!
