"Wait, is water alive?" one of my students asked as we studied the water cycle. Seventh graders are naturally curious about how living things interact with and depend on non-living things like soil, air, and water. Across the globe, from rainforests to ponds to marine environments, the living and non-living components are linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows. Making ecosystem dioramas will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of biodiverse communities of organisms and their physical environment.
With books and globes in hand, students will be able to research an ecosystem--and then build a diorama with materials like modeling clay and cardstock.
Books in both Spanish and English will inspire students to create beautifully crafted projects.
Forging a connection to the natural world is crucial for motivating and inspiring climate action. My big-picture goal is to nurture the natural love and appreciation young people have for our perfect planet Earth, so that as they grow from middle school students to high school students and beyond, they will take the lead to shape hearts and minds in our fight to mitigate climate change.
