Eager Learners are Hungry for Rich Literature!

My students need 21 high-quality Spanish children's literature books to build their background knowledge and develop essential literacy skills for reading and comprehending texts.

My Students

My kindergarten students enthusiastically turn the pages of each book they pick up from our classroom library. Now that we are halfway through the school year, they have become familiar with most of the books in our classroom. They are hungry for more high-quality picture books in Spanish.

My classroom of 17 bright and inquisitive kindergarteners is located in a high-needs urban setting.

Our school is the largest elementary school in the school district with about 700 students, many of whom receive free and reduced lunch. I teach in a dual language immersion program where 90% of the daily instruction is in Spanish and 10% is in English. I have 10 Spanish-dominant students and 7 English-dominant students. All of the students feel excited and proud to be learning a second language (both English and Spanish). Throughout the dual language immersion program, students develop bilingual and biliterate skills as well as an appreciation and awareness of our multicultural world.

My Project

All of the Spanish picture books I am requesting are high-quality texts with colorful language and vivid illustrations. As students dive into these books, they build their background knowledge which helps them make personal connections to their reading. Also, these books will be used as teaching tools to explicitly teach other reading comprehension strategies involving how to ask questions, how to make mental images while reading, how to make inferences, how to determine the main ideas from a text, and how to synthesize what we read. In using the chosen engaging texts to teach these essential literacy skills, students will become more advanced readers and thinkers.

For most of my students, this year marks their first experience in an educational setting.

It is my job to inspire within them a love of learning and reading. I know how thrilled my students become when I present a new book to them. They are eager to get their hands on more books to further pique their interest and develop their literacy skills. By donating these books to our classroom, my kindergarteners in years to come will become better readers and continue to feel excited about learning.
