My Students

Our English students at HFWA are engaged, thoughtful, creative and hilarious. They make insightful connections between what we are reading and their lives every day in class. They also attend school within a district that has been chronically underfunded and understaffed for years. Coming off of an almost entirely virtual last 18 months, we would love to ensure students have hard copies of engaging literature to read for our IB Middle Years Literature Program. In particular, our 10th graders started a dystopia unit the month. As a key part of the unit, our 10th graders will participate in small group book discussions on a dystopian novel of their choice based on their interest and reading level. We already have copies of Fahrenheit 451, Hunger Games and The Giver, and this year we would love to add Octavia Butler's Kindred into the rotation!

My Project

This is the first unit in high school in which students will have a choice as to what book they get to read in school! We want to ensure that we have diverse, interesting and engaging options that support many reading levels. Kindred by Octavia Butler explores incorporates an element of time travel with an exploration of slavery as the protagonist, Dana vacillates between her present world in Los Angeles, California in 1976 and a pre-Civil War plantation in Maryland. We believe that this unit will spark an abundance of exciting discussions as students navigate the text in small groups to have ongoing conversations about race, gender, power and genre.
