Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach First grade at a Title 1 Dual Language school. My students are English and/or Spanish Language Learners. We have many immigrant families.

My students and their families love their school and the community.

They participate in activities at our school and in town, and have a sense of ownership and pride. While our families might not have financial resources, they have love for their children.

My students are curious and eager to learn. First grade is their first exposure to Dual Language (2 teachers/2 languages), and most of them are nervous, but still eager to learn a new language. By the time they leave 1st grade they can read and write, and most importantly communicate in Spanish. A magical transformation takes place from September to June.

My Project

My classroom is a fun, inspiring place where students receive all their instruction in Spanish. There are 2 groups of students and 2 teachers. One group receives their instruction in Spanish with me, while the other group receives instruction in English with my partner. The next day we switch groups.

Our room is not air conditioned, and during the months of August-October and March-June it gets dangerously hot.

I have 2 smaller fans, but they are not enough to cool our room, and they are very loud.

The heat impedes our learning and makes the students (and myself) so tired and cranky. This fan will cool off our room quietly, and allow us to continue learning and having fun.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
