This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students march to the beat of their own drum. They aren't afraid to try new experiences. I want to give them as many opportunities to grow as students and musicians in music class and that is where our drum circle plays a big role.

The physical sensory nature of drumming provides a unique creative experience.

Recent research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and assists in healing emotional trauma. Drumming has a positive effect on anxiety, grief, depression, and behavioral issues. But how is that possible?! In a drum circle, students internalize the steady beat which leads to improved self-regulation. Additionally, we drum as a group which enhances students' ability to work as a team.

In 2018, the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience published a study to support that people who consistently drum, have better impulse control. This is an essential skill students must learn in order to succeed in school and to flourish in adulthood. This project has long term benefits for the current and future students, the community, and the culture of the school.
