Drumming Into Coding 2023

Help me give my students Sphero Specdrums, an innovative STEM tool comprised of rings and a tap pad, that allows students the create hands-on music with technology.

My Project

I teach students in grades 6-8 as a specials class. I like to make the time they spend in their special area class full of movement and hands on-learning so they can get a break from their workbooks and computer lessons. My students love exploring with materials like LEGOS and Makey-Makey technology tools, so much so that they beg me to bring them back the very next class. I would like to provide them with more hands on STEM tools in a different area, art and music, so they can see that STEM skills can move beyond video games. Hopefully this will inspire their future career choices in a positive manor.

My students love music so the Specdrums will allow them to create music using color, which will tie in technology and science learning.

They will have the freedom to create and work with partners, as well as provide them time to share out with the class, which are all important career readiness skills they will need in the future. These small technology tools are easy to bring out on a moments notice and will engage students in a creative exploration they cannot normally experience. The cases will ensure that the tools are around for many years and able to be shared by many classes.
