My Students
My students are truly the hope for the future. They attend a high school unlike any other in the county; our school is extremely diverse because it pulls from nearby neighborhoods, but it also has an IB magnet program. Because of this dynamic, my students come from vastly different neighborhoods and walks of life, yet they all want the same thing—a quality education. Regardless of their varying backgrounds, cultures, and identities, each day they come together and bring their strengths to the classroom. Such diverse environments are rare, and watching my students grow and learn together is a humble reminder that America is stronger united.
My Project
For years, I've avoided teaching Shakespeare to my sophomores, fearing that it was "too difficult." I was sadly mistaken; Shakespeare's themes resonate with audiences of all ages and abilities. With the right scaffolding, his works can be explored by anyone of any reading level. This was the most powerful lesson I learned this summer at the Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance workshop at the Globe Theatre. During my studies, I learned countless ways to bring Shakespeare to life for students. We danced to iambic pentameter and "story whooshed" our way through A Midsummer Night's Dream, a tale of love-sick teens and mischevious fairies. I am eager to bring back everything I learned and give it to my students in Greensboro; they will no doubt enjoy the movement-based learning as we explore ancient Athens. I am confident that with these books, my students will find a character they can relate to and fear Shakespeare no more.
