When you think of the authors you read in high school, what comes to mind? Shakespeare, Hemingway, Fitzgerald? Maybe you don't remember the authors you read, but you recall reading To Kill a Mockingbird, (or at least Sparknotes: To Kill a Mockingbird). For many years, the authors we've read have been similar in culture; they are usually white and of European descent. Fortunately today, English teachers are working to be more culturally inclusive with the texts we choose. Research has proven the incredible benefits of cultural representation, and students feel empowered when they see themselves in the novels we read. This is why it's important to expose them to the novel Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie is an award winning Nigerian author and feminist. Her words spark hope in a world that can sometimes feel intolerant and ignorant to other cultures. Her novel, Purple Hibiscus is a coming-of-age story about a Nigerian family dealing with the impact of colonialism. It's impossible not to read this novel and identify with Kambili in some fashion. Whether you're from Greensboro, Vietnam, or Nepal (just a few places where my students come from), you have felt out of place at some point in your life. Seeing Kambili battle the effects of colonialism and struggle with her identity is something that will speak to my students, and hopefully, spark an important conversation about cultural awareness. Please consider donating what you can to make this possible. Thank you for your consideration!!
