Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 6th grade special education class. The school I work at is located in an area with high povery and high crime.

My students have an array of learning disabilities that make it difficult to captivate each of their interests at once. Due to this problem, when it comes to doing class work they often are disengaged in the material and are easily distracted. Many of them have high energy which can often lead them into trouble in the classroom. Some of them are really interested in learning, others hate to read and a handful of them are physically there but are mentally watching Disney channel shows in their minds. All my students are quite different in some way, shape or form but they all share one thing in common, they are all dramatic. In addition, my students often fall behind in what they are learning in comparison to their peers; however if the material we used was more engaging and they are able to use their energy in positive ways, I can ensure that they will flourish in this classroom.

In the 6th grade, English language arts students learn to read poetry, write narrative passages, do research, create their own responses to what they are reading and write persuasive essays. Right now my students are on the response to literature unit, in order to keep my students engaged in the material, I requested books on poetry with colorful and engaging pictures. I also requested books that contain scripts so that each student can take on a different character role. My students are not afraid to perform. They definitely bring the drama into my room, so I want to bring the drama to them

You're help will ensure that my students are learning the same skills as general education students in their own grade. You will be helping my students use their dramatic tendencies to enhance their own personal learning and provide an avenue for them to release their energy in a creative way. You will be making a big difference in their lives and how they see literature if they are physically able to experience it through acting.
