As the art teacher in a rural elementary school, I am in search of donors to purchase a DVD/VHS player for the art classroom. Our school district adopted a new art curriculum this year. Although I am not a teacher who "teaches from a textbook," the curriculum came with an assortment of DVDs and VHS tapes for each grade level (K-5th). The supplementary videos create connections between visual art and the other fine arts disciplines (music, drama, and dance), as well as literature. I would like to be able to show students the short video clips during my lessons. The art classroom has a TV, but is lacking a DVD/VHS player. The videos will help my students to understand the connections between the fine arts and literature. The videos will accompany art lessons. I will lead class discussions following the viewing of the videos to help students see the cross-curricular connections. For example: I teach first grade students about line in artwork--different kinds of lines and how lines can evoke feelings or moods. To accompany this lesson, I have a 10 minute video of "Mama Don't Allow"--a book written and illustrated by Thacher Hurd. Students will watch the video and then we will identify the different kinds of lines and line qualities in the outlines of the characters, objects, and scenery. Students can recognize the use of lines to convey feelings of calmness, movement, and excitement. Will you please donate a DVD/VHS player to my classroom? All of my students will benefit and our videos won't collect dust!
