This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We serve students in grades 7-12 who have struggled to be successful in the traditional school setting. Some of our students have been assigned to us as a result of disciplinary infractions. Others attend for academic reasons. Many of our students are behind at least one grade level and in danger of not graduating. In addition to traditional diplomas, interested students can also pursue their high school equivalency diploma. Our program offers reduced class sizes and diverse teaching styles to address students’ needs.
My Project
My students HATE reading books! Typically, students do not get excited about reading. Exposing students to non-traditional texts can spark their interest and ignite a love for reading. Not only is Walter Dean Myers's Monster based on an interesting subject, but it is written like a movie script, so it reads more like a play than a novel. The topic of this book is relatable to these students because many of them have had similar experiences to the main character. Reading this book could change the way my students view literature and foster a lifelong love of reading.
