The first days of school are always buzzing with excitement. Anyone who has a five or six year old knows that they too are always buzzing. In order to start the year off right, everything needs to be organized and structured.
My students are a diverse group of learners ranging in many different ways including age, race, and economic background.
Meeting the many different needs can be a challenge when students are not always able to focus on classwork. There are many students in this school that also require special attention because of emotional disabilities. These students are not always able to communicate their feelings when anxious or upset and therefore require not only attention but extra patience.
My Project
Everyone knows that a classroom needs a library. What some people forget about is whether or not their library reflects the diversity of the students in that class. I want everyone to be able to find a character or story that they can relate to. If we relate to a book, we are more likely to understand and enjoy a book. Right now, my library does not have many cultures represented. It also does not have very many books about different kinds of families, including LGBT.
Exposing students to different cultures or lifestyles when they are young helps to make them more tolerant.
