Diverse Readers Meet Underrepresented Author Collections

Help me give my students a diverse and rich reading experience to increase their academic learning

My Project

My students in Troy District 1 are eager, curious, and enthusiastic learners, always ready to engage with new ideas. However, many of the traditional novels in our English curriculum no longer resonate with today’s students, often failing to spark the excitement needed for meaningful literary engagement. I envision a classroom where vibrant academic discussions take place, driven by students who are empowered to guide their own learning. By offering a diverse selection of texts for small group study, I can foster an environment where students connect more deeply with the material, allowing my vision of a dynamic, student-centered classroom to truly come to life.

Montana has wide open spaces and few people, and these Title One students haven’t been exposed to current diverse cultural reading models including Native American titles.

By introducing a diverse range of books for students to explore through literary circles, my classroom will become a gateway for students to venture beyond the boundaries of their isolated mountain town. Through these stories, they will encounter different cultures, perspectives, and historical periods, enriching their understanding of the world and their place within it. The diversity in literature—from distant cities and foreign lands to pivotal moments in history—will not only expand their horizons but also encourage empathy and critical thinking as they draw connections between their own experiences and those of the characters they read about. Literary circles will foster thoughtful dialogue, enabling students to share their reflections and interpretations with their peers, thus deepening their comprehension and appreciation of the literature while developing skills in collaboration, analysis, and respectful debate.
