My Project

My 4th and 5th-grade students are creative, curious, fun-loving, and love to learn. The school, we learn at, is a public, neighborhood elementary school with a high number of English Language Learners, special education programs, and free/reduced lunch qualifiers. Our classroom is part of an alternative learning program that focuses on kids learning through community, projects and integrated themes. I enjoy teaching in an alternative environment because it feeds into students' natural curiosity and passion to learn; we engage in interesting, real-world studies that keep students on their toes and problem-solving for the future. The kids always rise to the challenge!

My students are most engaged and connected as a community when we do integrated learning; I'm excited to bring a social studies and ELA unit to my learners through a novel study of the book, "Sarah Journeys West: An Oregon Trail Survival Story" and other exciting texts.

Engaging ELA instruction through novels will help my students grow their love of reading and help them to grow as a reader this year while also accessing social studies standards.

I choose the novel "Sarah Journeys West: An Oregon Trail Survival Story" because it will reach all of the learners in our multi-age classroom and allow me to hone in on ELA topics including historical fiction, character analysis, setting, and theme. The other texts I choose will engage learners interested in deepening their historical background about the Oregon Trail.
