Not only is it important to have access to Indigenous authors, it's also important to show young people the art, the history and culture of the people whose land our school resides on. \r\nAlso, many students have to deal with trauma and loss. I think it's helpful and important to have many different tools to process these feelings. Whether that is art supplies, books, or just stories for them to find themselves in. Sometimes just hearing stories that are relatable can help a student feel less alone. The kids love it and they have already grabbed all of the hand lotion and most of the brushes and lip balm. Some of them have even created a little personal hygiene collection that they keep on their desks. This has helped erase the stigma around personal care items and it's just a normal thing to grab what you need to stay clean and feeling like your best self. They have been putting on deodorant before going to PE(BLESS!), putting on lip balm before a cold recess, and brushing each other's hair during free time. It has helped build connection in my room with them smelling all the different scents, talking about what color brush they picked, and which deodorant they like best.
