My students need putty, pipe cleaners, and other craft supplies to create visualizations of the parts of speech and to communicate the main ideas of non-fiction readings. Headphones and bouncy bands to eliminate distractions for students.
My students are mostly low-income students from Easley, South Carolina. I teach a combination of students with special needs, ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages), students living in poverty, and a few (not the majority) students from middle-income backgrounds. Around 80% of my students receive free and/or reduced lunch at school, but they are avid learners with a desire to know what the world can be like outside of where they are from. When I asked them how many of them want to move or travel outside of South Carolina and/or the United States when they grow up, the majority raised their hands. They deserve every opportunity to make their dreams a possibility!
My Project
I have students with several diverse learning needs. Recently, I attended a professional development that included information about different sensory styles, and how little attention we give in education to kinesthetic (motion-oriented) and tactile (touching and manipulating things) learners.
Bouncy bands for desks help very active children release energy and concentrate while working at a desk, and headphones help keep out noise for children who need quiet to work while other students discuss their ideas.
They can also help auditory learners by allowing them to listen to reading passages on computers or to have background music while other students need quiet.
Craft sticks, putty, twine, colored pencils, paper clips, mailing labels, and pipe cleaners will be used to craft individual and group tactile representations of the parts of speech, vocabulary words, and the main ideas of non-fiction reading passages, and colored pencils will serve the visualization needs of my visual learners.
Furthermore, the buzzer set will facilitate interactive competitive review games, which often engage students who are not usually as engaged in class activities.
And last, but not least, it's flu and cold season, folks, and while I've asked students for additional donations of facial tissue, we have officially run out for the school year at this point, and students miss less instructional time if they do not have to run to the restroom just to blow noses!
