Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English Learners. Some of my students have recently moved to the United States while others have been here for a longer. Their English language proficiency varies from basic to more advanced.
All of my students come with high expectations for themselves as they work hard to attain graduation; their goal is to better their lives through continuing education in college as they become successful members of our community.
They face many challenges as they learn a new language in a new community. English learners have to work very hard so that they can access the information in their content area classes such as math, science, social studies, and electives while they are still building their English language.
My student's English proficiency varies from basic to more advanced. They take classes focused in reading, writing, and grammar to develop their English skills. Besides the language instruction, English learners also need help with understanding the customs, traditions, history and heritage of our community. I am privileged to be a part of their journey of discovery and growth!
My Project
Students that are learning English need books that are interesting so they can stay motivated to read more difficult texts. Diverse books can help students to want to learn more! The staff from the EL department has donated books for the classroom, and it's limited by what teachers can find on hand or had in their private libraries.
Reading for only 20 minutes a day can increase a student's vocabulary and skills to develop their English language.
The more books that are available for them to read, the more that students can spend time acquiring language while engaged in a gratifying activity!
