Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a group of amazing students who bring so much to the school community. The students in my class need lots of repetition to learn new skills. In our class, we choose to focus on the students' strengths and gifts. Each student in Mrs. Wu's class has so much potential, and Mrs. Wu. and her para-educators and nurses are working to unlock that potential every day! Please help us to make our classroom a place of learning and thriving!
The students in my class have complex medical and educational needs.
Students need lots of support to be at school and learn. Students are emerged in meaningful experiences that engage multiple senses through time in the general education classroom, meaningful peer engagement, community exploration, music, art and gardening.
Distance Learning creates unique challenges for this population. Many students in our class have visual, hearing and/or orthopedic impairments and rely on a variety of senses to access curriculum online. Using only digital platforms makes that difficult so students need access to a variety of experience and materials to engage multiple senses in learning.
My Project
My students are really rocking digital learning. But many parents report they need more sensory activities to do while we are distance learning. At school, students have many opportunities everyday to explore sensory activities and do art. Please help me to provide the materials needed for students to explore and families to make and creative a variety of sensory activities and experience guided by the teacher in our daily meetings. This would allow to engage in daily arts and crafts while working on a variety of learning standards and IEP goals. Students will be able to create art projects with feathers and google eyes, touch pipe cleaners, get messy with shaving cream and paint, explore a tray of water beads and roll, kneed and play with play dough. Art/Sensory bags will be delivered to students through contactless delivery and will allow them to continue this important learning the rest of this school year and through extended school year. This project will provide me with the materials to make bags to keep my students learning at home. Daily instruction online will support student's learning with these materials and hopefully provide a richer more hands on learning experience as students work on IEP goals, fine motor skills and preacademic skills.
