The first day of school, I decided to have a small, cheap microscope sit out on my classroom's coffee table. One by one that morning, students took turns sharing and teaching each other how to use their first ever glimpse into the micro-world.
If my 7th grade students quickly discovered how to use the microscope in one morning- what could they discover in two school years?
Many have never seen the smaller world. Oh-the-wonders they have when collecting Alaskan plants on hikes, searching for water bears (tardigrades) in our local lakes, and discovering reactions of labs.
Our students are eager to learn- our students are scientists. At our Title I school, many of our Indigenous students come from a natural line of scientists. Through observation, traditional storytelling, and engineering, the Alaska Native and American Indian tribes have created and found many useful tools. My goal is to help support our scientists through offering advanced level mathematics courses and hands-on discovery in the Great-Land. Quyana for your support.
My Project
Science is a hands-on experience motivated by discovery, observation, critical-thinking, and reading. My ideal classroom would include a station for 6-8 students working through a microscope lab while the rest of the class is working on a project, collecting data, creating a presentation, or reading, through stations. I would like to offer field trips for students to collect their own specimen found in the Alaskan environment which they experience daily.
Students in the middle school levels are naturally inquisitive and open to share their new ideas and discoveries.
Providing microscopes to our science courses will shape the way they think about earth, space, water, and themselves! Visit my website www.alaskamath.net to learn more about my classroom.
