Discovering Light And Color In Preschool

My students need a light table with accessories to engage in scientific explorations and discoveries of light and color.

My Students

Young children learn through active exploration of their environment. What better way to engage them in early science activities than by giving them the opportunity to discover the properties of light and color through the use of a table top light box, (not to mention it's therapeutic capabilities)?

I teach preschool special education in an urban and more than 75% free lunch school.

My students all qualify for specially designed instruction as described by their individual education programs (IEPs). I provide services in the areas of social/emotional, adaptive/daily living, and cognitive development. I work with a team of an occupational therapist, physical therapist and speech/language therapist, to round out their services. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and social economic levels. I am very fortunate to work with these young kiddos and watch as they develop their skills. I often have two or three students who are diagnosed with Autism or other related disorders. I get tremendous joy when one of students begins to open up to the world around them and we get to see their personality in full display!

My Project

Considering my students' needs, a light box will provide an incredible dual opportunity. First, it will develop their scientific knowledge as they explore light and color properties. Secondly, it will give them a therapeutic outlet as many of my students have sensory processing disorders. I plan on setting up a special place in my classroom for placing the light box. This location will be a science center which students will have access to on a daily basis.

The use of the light box will provide my special needs students with access to scientific exploration as well as a therapeutic alternative.

Many of my students do not process sensory input the way typical children do. They are often overwhelmed by loud noises or harsh lighting. A light box will provide a safe alternative in those situations.
