Discover the Beauty in Our State!

Help me give my students the supplies they can use to study and draw the natural elements that surround them.

My Students

My students live in a very active community that loves and supports all things nature. Their writing pieces are riddled with characters that spend time running the trails and exploring the mountains, and their recess time interacting meaningfully with their surroundings and participating in nature clubs and building forts.

Today, the majority of our school day is spent inside and I want to devote some classroom time to being outside and indulge in the calming effects of nature while enjoying some quality time together while they are learning, too.

If they love being in nature during their unstructured times, I want to do what I can to bring that into their structured learning time as well.

My Project

Getting outside — but at a safe distance from other people — can be one way to boost my students' resilience. Connecting with nature and creatures may also offset the downside of social distancing. I want students to find a special place in nature, whether it’s under a tree at the end of the yard, a hidden bend of a creek behind their home, or a piece of grassy area in the play area at school. Know the birds that live near, know the trees that they pass by each day, I want them to know these things as if they were a part of their family. Doing this can reduce their sense of isolation, and bring about a sense of peace when things are constantly changing in our community.

The products I have selected will get my students excited about knowing the natural elements around them well enough to call them by name and be comforted by them.

The pamphlets will help them know the bird, flower and tree species in their area. The art supplies are for students to tap into their creativity as that can be such a wonderful stress buster for them as well. Since both art and nature are such effective stress reduction tools, we can seek out ways for our kids to connect with nature and be inspired by it to create a masterpiece.
