Getting outside — but at a safe distance from other people — can be one way to boost my students' resilience. Connecting with nature and creatures may also offset the downside of social distancing. I want students to find a special place in nature, whether it’s under a tree at the end of the yard, a hidden bend of a creek behind their home, or a piece of grassy area in the play area at school. Know the birds that live near, know the trees that they pass by each day, I want them to know these things as if they were a part of their family. Doing this can reduce their sense of isolation, and bring about a sense of peace when things are constantly changing in our community. The products I have selected will get my students excited about knowing the natural elements around them well enough to call them by name and be comforted by them. The pamphlets will help them know the bird, flower and tree species in their area. The art supplies are for students to tap into their creativity as that can be such a wonderful stress buster for them as well. Since both art and nature are such effective stress reduction tools, we can seek out ways for our kids to connect with nature and be inspired by it to create a masterpiece.
