Help me give my students a Yakker Tracker and a wireless doorbell so we can have a quieter classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh- and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

After 18 months of being isolated from their friends and teachers, they are still trying to navigate the return to school and academics.

Many of them are have developed anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal hasn't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they have experienced for the past 18 months. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID-19 and are struggling with grief as well.

Although I can't solve these problems, I continue to do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

Middle school students are extremely lively and social: Their friends are their life, and it's hard for them to stop talking during class. If we had a wireless doorbell, I could easily get students' attention when it's instructional time. Instead of using my tired voice, I could just click the button of the wireless doorbell, and students would understand that it's time to quiet down. As an added bonus, there are more than 50 tunes that the doorbell can make so it doesn't become boring. Any time I can get their attention without raising my voice is a win, in my opinion.

The other item I am requesting is a Yakker Trakker: this device is a decibel meter that looks like a stoplight that I can program so the light turns red if the classroom noise rises past a certain decibel level.

Having this device will not only protect my sanity, but it will also protect all of us from excessive noise, which can harm our hearing. These two items would make my classroom a quieter and saner space for learning and the Yakker Trakker would help students learn how to self-regulate the noise they're producing with a visual reminder.
