My Students

Focusing on STEM and Problem Based Learning in my class allows me to place the responsibility of learning in the student's hands, empowering the at-risk students in my classroom. At my Title I school, eighty-five percent of the students at my school are on free or reduced-price lunch plans, many speak English as a second language and are recent migrants to the US or are first generation US citizens. My students are charismatic, hard-working teenagers, who are struggling to overcome the restraints that growing up in poverty has placed on them. While attending my school, each student receives vocational training. This prepares them for careers after high school.

However, for many of the students in my class, post-secondary education is what will provide them with the necessary skills to move out of that lowest 20% income bracket.

Between the cost of maintaining a 40 year-old school and deep budget cuts for public schools, my extremely supportive administrative team can only approve the bare essentials for our classroom. I know that the students in my class would benefit from having up-to-date technology that allows them to learn about our world and to develop solutions to 21st century problems.

My Project

My AP Human Geography class conducts immigration interviews every year and then turns in a paper-based assignment detailing the interview and providing additional background. We then trace the migration patterns onto a large class map. This is a popular assignment for AP Human Geography classes but in my classroom, I noticed a major difference in the work completed by my students. Since the majority of my students are either recent immigrants or first generation US citizens, the interviews were conducted primarily with family members, close friends and even with each other. With our current assignment I read the amazing stories but no one else does.

Creating digital versions of their immigration interviews will enable my students to share their experiences as new Americans and will increase the understanding of the migration experience.

I have already purchased three Kindle Fire tablets for the class and this fourth one will allow four students to create video interviews. The green screen means that students can use pictures and videos as a backdrop for their storytelling. Using the Aurasma app on the tablets will allow students to incorporate augmented reality into their projects by creating trigger images that can be scanned to reveal photographs and videos overlaying the image. The six dry erase maps allow students to quickly trace the journeys of their interviewees and 3D printer filament will permit students to make visual aids for the project.
