Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Too often we have lost treasure troves of data due to faulty desktop hard drives, district scheduled wipe outs and original computer restores or just plain virus attacks. Also, accepting and reading USB keys on 2 computers with 2 ports during class is way too slow and takes up too much class time.
My students are 8th graders who live in a suburban community comprising of 99% Hispanic heritage.
It is a school that serves grades PK-8 and is among the few public schools in Florida to receive a distinguished Great Schools Rating of 9 out of 10. It is a public school that serves 1014 students that come from an upper middle class background.
My Project
Storage is an essential part of the learning process. Students are not only asked to utilize their creative powers to make projects but record and analyze these thoughtful works using audio and video resources that often consume enormous amounts memory collectively. For example, 25 USB keys holding only one gigabyte of data each translates to 25 gigabytes of storage space required for only one class submission. What is worst is the limitations of viewing each file on desktop computer that have only 2 or 3 USB ports available. Our school lab is often booked by other subject areas so having a large storage, 3 terabyte hard drive, will be very convenient and will save time and speed up the assessment process. Furthermore, it will solve the issue of sudden lost student data on the school's desktop computers. This translates into more, faster, and better student assessments and higher grades.
These resources are for the long term and will serve not one class but many over several years.
The idea is to ensure students have equal and multiple accesses to present their data. This equipment supports this ideal and prevents serious problems of data loss and lost class time due to delayed presentations. The final effect is that teaching instruction and class work becomes more efficient and effective.
