Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in mobile homes in Houston, Texas. Most of their families have almost no flexible income — there are no extra art supplies at home, no cameras, no tablets. And yet, every single day, they show up to my classroom ready to create.

This is a Title 1 charter school.

My students are not supposed to be competing with kids from private schools and wealthy suburbs for spots at the top art universities in the country. But they are — and they are winning.

Our program has earned acceptances and full-ride scholarships to RISD, Pratt Institute, SCAD, Parsons School of Design, and MICA. Our AP Studio Art scores are strong. These are not lucky outcomes. This is what happens when dedicated young artists are given the tools and the belief that they belong.

I am requesting an iPad and digital pen for our visual art classroom.

An iPad would transform how my students create, document, and present their work. The iPad's camera system alone would allow students to photograph their artwork professionally — something that matters enormously for portfolio submissions to competitive art schools. Beyond photography, students would gain access to industry-standard creative tools like Procreate, Adobe Fresco, and design apps that mirror real professional workflows.

These iPads would close that gap and open doors that my students have already proven they are ready to walk through.

When a student from a mobile home community earns a full scholarship to RISD, something remarkable has happened. It means a teacher believed in them. It means a community showed up. It means that a lack of money did not get to decide what a young artist was worth.
