Differentiation Grouping: Getting Back on Track after Quarantine

My Students

I teach both honors students and regular students at a local high school. My honors students are quick, clever, and reaching high for new opportunities and alternative ways of seeing the world. They delight me every day with their humor, creativity, and quest for excellence. However, they feel anxious and stressed as the world shifts beneath them with cancelled classes, impersonal online learning, and quarantines. They seek more opportunities to diversify their learning, color outside the lines, and push existing boundaries.

My regular level students are charming and clever with a wide range of abilities, but in this group, I see the effects of learning gaps, lesson disruption, and discouragement.

They have clearly been impacted by the pandemic academically, socially, and emotionally. They are hoping to be ready for college and career, but they worry if they will be able to achieve or if their efforts will matter in a world of lost opportunities and postponed events.

My Project

After the many gaps in face-to-face learning over the last two years, many of my students are facing similar gaps in their learning and in their motivation. Having a headphones lab in my classroom will allow me to work with one group while other groups listen to a short instructional video and continue to learn at their own pace.

I am working to create mini-lessons that will personalize learning and fill the gaps of the individual, so students can continue to move toward the standards without getting discouraged.

Differentiated learning in the classroom is sometimes hard to achieve, but with the use of headphones for short periods of time, I can move to different groups to address specific needs for part of the lesson time.
