Differentiating Instruction With Literature Circles

My students need 8 sets of high-interest books (authors of diaries and letters as well as Newbery award winners) so that we can have differentiated literature circles and read a novel a month. We are trying to read a million words!

My Students

My students hunger for good literature and the desire to discuss books with each other. These books will allow for meaningful discourse among students and allow my classes to reach our goal of reading one million pages this school year!

Gifted and high-achieving students are often thought of as not having needs, but they have do!

They hunger for knowledge and intellectual stimulation. I am a middle school English and social studies teacher who has the privilege of instructing gifted and high-achieving sixth graders every day, as well as eighth grade English students who are headed for high school. We are located in a large urban public school district. My students are curious, intelligent, and strive for knowledge. The books I have chosen for our literature circles will expose my students to well written books that are culturally diverse and offer the opportunity for them to read different authors beyond those that are on the Young Adult Best Sellers list. The themes of the books are diaries and letters as well as Newbery award winners. My students come to school to be challenged, and I will believe these books will offer them that opportunity.

My Project

Exposure to good literature and excellent writing makes my students better readers and writers. With the wide array of books I have selected (authors of diaries and letters as well as Newbery award winners), we will be able to have monthly literature circles that will be student directed and collaborative in nature. Students will be exposed to more writing styles, which will in turn make them better writers. Working in literature circle teams will prepare students for the world of high school, university, and the world beyond. Teaching them these simple skills--collaboration and cooperation--through literature circles will enhance my students' overall educational experience. Nothing can replace a good book and the joy of watching a child become so engrossed in the novel that the world around them disappears. Help me bring this adventure to my classroom. Help me bring these classic books to my classroom!

By offering my students a wide array of books, they will be exposed to the world beyond their own.

They will be able to discuss what they have read with each other and as a class. They will hone their writing skills through writing reviews of the books they have read. The books I have chosen to offer my students are timeless and I will be able to use them each year, and hopefully will be able to continue to supplement my literature circles library. Thank you for your time and consideration.
