My Students

Why music? Music touches a part of our psyche that nothing else can. 85% of all musicians learn music in school. Mariachi music is culturally relevant to our growing Latino population and just plain fun.

The students at South Medford High School are fantastic.

They are smart, goal oriented, thoughtful, and caring young people. Students are tolerant of diversity and are looking forward to establishing a Mariachi program here. The growing population of Latino students to this community has prompted us to add a Mariachi program to our already diverse music department. We are working to find new ways to make learning music relevant to more of our student population.

My Project

The instruments that I am requesting the Guitarron and the Vihuela are traditional Mariachi instruments. The Guitarron is the heart of the Mariachi ensemble as it gives the rest of the ensemble a foundation. The instruments will help students to learn about the history of the music and instruments. Students will learn to play and sing traditional folk songs, rancheros, sons, boleros, and regional dances of Mexico. Through Mariachi music we will study the culture and history of Mexico.

The students, parents, and the school community are excited to start a new music idiom here at South Medford High School.

My hope is for the Mariachi band to perform in the community giving parents and families a closer connection to the school through music.
