Dialing Into Reading!

Help me give my students a phone that records so they can get book recommendations and record their own reviews of their favorite titles.

My Project

The students at my school love to read! They are excited to visit our school's media center and check out books to read, then come back to talk about the books they've read. They love to get book recommendations, too. Sometimes it's busy in the library, which makes it hard to have conversations on the spot with readers about books or to give suggestions for other books readers might like. I've been thinking about how I can address this challenge in a way that is student-centered, interactive, honors student voice, and builds excitement about reading, too.

This project will give our readers an old school style "phone" that records so they can pick up the receiver to hear a recording with book recommendations or record their own review of the the latest book that they've read.

The phone will be a fun, hands-on and interactive tool to provide readers with a real world application for practicing their speaking skills to share their thoughts and opinions about books. It would be so powerful for students to make recordings of book recommendations for others in our community of readers. This would be a great project for our school's silent book club crew!

It will also help to address the "what should I read next?" questions that come up over and over again. This project also includes copies of some highly requested books that readers would love to read and talk about. Wimpy Kid, Baby Sitters Club, Spy School, and anything space or soccer themed fly off the shelves, so we always need more copies of these books.
