My students live in a small, close-knit, rural community in southwest Virginia. We are located in the coalfields of the Appalachian Mountains. Many of my students come from low-income families, but that does not deter them.
My students have a hunger to learn and work very hard to achieve their goals.
Working well together and encouraging one another are attributes that I find to be very special with my group of sweet, helpful students. They enjoy hands-on activities and small group collaboration. They enjoy lessons including music, art, and especially technology.
My Project
My students are in need of stable, adjustable desks. These new desks will make a positive influence on my students' learning environment. The desks that are currently in my classroom have a slanted top, connected to the seat. These types of desks become top-heavy and can easily turn over. They are not ideal for group work due to the slanted top.
I believe it is essential for students to feel comfortable in their own space so they can become more involved in class, and these adjustable desks are a way to improve this situation.
The new desks requested have level tops and are very stable. The desks can also fit well together for group activities. When the student can see himself/herself as a productive member of our classroom community, self-esteem increases and they are able to better understand, appreciate, and learn from each other.
