Delving Into DNA

Help me give my students miniPCR kits to develop their understanding of biotechnology principles and connect their learning to real ecological issues.

My Project

Students benefit most from science when they can actually roll up their sleeves and do it, which is exactly why miniPCR bio makes such intuitive, accessible gear. While we are incredibly lucky to already have several of their gel electrophoresis kits and pipettes in our classroom, my students need new Learning Labs this year to keep that momentum going. Without new curriculum scenarios, this excellent equipment will just sit on the shelf or get used for repetitive exercises. New kits will give my students fresh, real-world problems to solve, such as analyzing DNA evidence or tracking an outbreak, turning standard classroom lessons into actual scientific discoveries.

Through these kits, students will learn how to perform gel electrophoresis and run PCR, and gain a much deeper understanding of the use of biotechnology in environmental and marine science.

In the Shark Lab: Great White Migration lab, students use DNA fingerprinting to explore shark ecology in this engaging gel electrophoresis activity.

In the Conservation Genetics Lab: Discovering Lemur Diversity, students analyze authentic field data and perform gel electrophoresis to determine whether scientists may have rediscovered a lemur species thought extinct.

In the eDNA Project: Sampling Soil for Antibiotic Resistance, students will use PCR and gel electrophoresis to help monitor the spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

In the Galápagos Penguin Lab: Biodiversity at Risk lab, students use gel electrophoresis to compare the genetic diversity of different penguin species and link their findings to differences in ecology and extinction risk. This is especially relevant because it is an El Niño year, and Galápagos penguins have experienced multiple population declines during El Niño events.

In the Agricultural Monitoring Lab: A Case Study in Antibiotic Resistance, students use PCR to test soil samples from neighboring farms to determine whether antibiotic-resistant bacteria are present, indicating that the bacteria have traveled from one farm to another.
