Delightful Diversity

Help me give my students skin color construction paper, copy paper for school activities and homework, and color ink to print student pictures to celebrate our diversity around our classroom.

My Students

Our school district has made national news due to its financial budget crisis. I currently have thirty students in my class. Our school is a Title I school, and all of the students receive free lunch.

My students are from a diverse, urban area.

There are forty languages spoken in the homes of our students. Most of my students speak a language other than English at home. A number of those families have difficulty assisting their children with homework because they do not understand English. We are not receiving money for supplies from the school district, which makes teaching difficult. Students see school as a safe place where they can rely on predictable routines and are excited about learning. Their hard work motivates me to seek out the very best opportunities for them.

My Project

My students are so fortunate to learn in a room filled with students from around the globe. There are eight different languages spoken in the homes of my students. We have a beautiful variety of skin colors in my classroom, which we love to celebrate any chance we get.

When working and learning with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures present in the classroom, students gain a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.

There is also a constant theme of love and acceptance present at are school. We are lacking in paper, which is a problem. Every week I have to request parents to bring in more paper and only the same couple parents are responding. I would like to carry out the rest of the year not asking for more paper from my students. I would also like to create more projects using skin color paper, instead of students coloring on copy paper. First graders love seeing themselves represented in the classroom and using skin color paper definitely excites them. I would also like to print more pictures of my students learning throughout my classroom. Seeing their classmates around the room and remembering the fun activities from this year makes our classroom environment a home-away-from-home.

Thank you for considering donating to my beautiful diverse classroom.
