My Project

My students are an amazing group of upper elementary learners who benefit from hands-on activities. We are an engineering magnet and students are taught five steps in the STEM project process. Sometimes my students struggle to take risks and get frustrated when they make mistakes. I want to show them how to apply our STEM learning steps to their reading development.

I want to help students use an engineering mindset to decode unfamiliar words.

Students will become comfortable knowing that errors are part of learning by reading books showing mistakes that become solutions. We can study longer words by using the puzzles and phonic kits to create multi-syllabic words. We will explore how different combinations of blends, digraphs, prefixes, bases and roots, and suffixes create words using magnet boards. We will use STEM activities to realize that reading new words also uses our STEM mindset. Students are very motivated by STEM activities and using projects as a way to apply their learning will help them make stronger connections.
