My Project

Learning to read is one of the most important milestones in first grade. My students are learning new phonics skills each week, but they need books that match those skills so they can practice independently with confidence. Decodable books allow students to apply what they've learned and strengthen reading fluency. These books will become a daily part of our literacy instruction and will help every child grow into a stronger, more confident reader.

Decodable books give students the opportunity to practice reading words that follow the phonics patterns they have already been taught during whole group and small group instruction.

Instead of guessing at unfamiliar words, they learn to decode them using the strategies we practice in class. This repeated success builds reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and confidence. As students become more successful readers, they become more motivated to read independently and develop a lifelong love of books.

The goal of this project is to provide every student with access to engaging, phonics-aligned decodable books that support independent reading practice. These books will help students improve their decoding skills, increase reading fluency and their confidence to grow successful, lifelong readers. Having a variety of books for them to choose from allows them to find books that align with their interests and not only increase reading fluency but build a love of reading.

My first graders are curious, hardworking, and eager to learn. They learn best when they have resources that meet them where they are and help them experience success. With the right books in their hands, they will gain confidence, believe in themselves as readers, and build skills that will benefit them for years to come. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the pride that comes from saying, "I can read this all by myself!"
