This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It seems like everything has changed in recent years, but this new change of approach to teaching children how to read seems like a very positive change. The Science of Reading (SOR) has now become the "best" way to teach students how to read. The idea beyond SOR is that students need to learn how to read with decodable texts, not leveled readers. Decodable texts give students the chance to take the phonics skills taught in class and apply them to a book. Unfortunately, my current reading curriculum uses leveled texts. These decodable books would allow me to use the most recent researched based approach to teaching my struggling students how to read.

This set of decodable readers will go hand and hand with my phonics curriculum and give students the opportunity to apply taught skills and read independently.

The set of six books will allow me to use these texts with my small reading groups and the lesson plans will help provide me with framework that ensures my students are slowly, but surely, building a strong foundation in literacy.
