Help me give my students the materials they need to have a fun and engaging National Decision Day event. Students will create custom college paraphernalia, win prizes and fellowship with their peers, staff, and alumni.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Artists, musicians, athletes, scholars, advocates, taste-makers, engineers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, police officers, fire-firefighters, bankers, and counselors. This is just a small scope of what our students aspire to be, and the work they put into pursuing these aspirations is unimaginable to say the least.
They posses a tremendous amount of raw potential-potential that is just waiting to be nurtured and fed.
As students of a Title I school, many of them are surrounded by images of poverty and hardships. They face unimaginable obstacles but still work hard, show-up to school, and perform under the pressure they face. I am humbled and inspired everyday by the hopes, dreams and resilience our students possess.
My Project
Studies have shown that the presence of college paraphernalia can influence how children see themselves and the options available to them. Our goal is to saturate our school with college paraphernalia. We need tie-dye kits that will allow our seniors to creatively show what their next steps are. During the event, students will wear their custom Decision Day shirts during a school pep rally to show their peers, grade 9-11, what their post-secondary plans are. Seniors will also have an opportunity to win "college ready" baskets full of supplies for their first year of college and take priceless pictures to keep the memory of this time alive.
Students will celebrate taking ownership of their future and inspire their younger classmates to create goals, make plans backed by actions and work for their dream to come true.
We want to inspire conversations of progress. Our hope is that our students and the community will see that college is an option and that with hard work it can be a reality.
