Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The college process. For many if us, this begins during junior year of high school. For my students, this process is about to occur much sooner, their 7th grade year.
My students are simply amazing people.
They are often faced with situations that could make many people just decide to give up. But not my kids. My students are resilient, smart, dedicated and ambitious. They are kids who want every opportunity given to them and seize these chances head on. My school is located in a very run down neighborhood, where crime and violence are an everyday occurrence. But my students want to rise above the chaos surrounding them through education. This is why they are my students. I work as a teacher for a college prep elective that students sign up for to help prepare them for college. We start this process young to ensure that students maintain focus on their goals, encouraging them to achieve their dreams of attending college. We work on organization, note taking and goal setting skills and work with a local university to bring college tutors into the school to help students maintain their grades.
My Project
With the college guides I have selected, my students will be able to constantly review important literature on the college admissions process, from choosing the right school, to writing a great essay and getting much needed scholarship money to pay for school. The program I run works on all of these things. The books I selected will go into our college resource library. This library is especially important because we do not always have access to computers and these guides help me and my students to continue studying the things we need to without having to rely on technology that we don't always have.
With our new classroom college guides, my students will be able to use these resources to prepare them for the long, difficult journey ahead of them.
Getting into college isn't easy, no matter where you come from. My students have obstacles that they must overcome to ensure they reach their goal of a college education. I hope these guides will help keep them focused on their dreams and help them learn how to navigate their own situations to ensure their personal academic success.
