My students are 6th graders from West Philadelphia. Many of them are below grade level in reading and about half of the students receive special education services. They attend an old neighborhood school, where books and other materials are scarce. My students can be difficult at times, but within them all is the want for something better for themselves. They are loud, energetic, funny and sweet. They will work hard when inspired and will protest (loudly!) when dissatisfied. While some of them are resilient and are able to rise above their circumstances, many of them feel defeated by a life that has not been what they want. These feelings often surface at school and many of them are angry. It is my job to not only teach them how to read and think, but also how to push through the bad times, stay focused on the good and always remind them that they have the power to change their lives through education.
