Help me give my students resources which represent positive Deaf role models. The new American Girl, Joss, just made her debut as a surfer/cheerleader who also is Deaf.
I educate students in numerous grade levels and educational settings. I currently work with students in elementary, middle and high school that are placed in either general education or exceptional student education settings. Each of these students have some type of hearing loss (mild to profound), however, a large number of them have profound hearing losses and communicate using American Sign Language.
Most of my students are born into hearing families, with minimal exposure to other Deaf adults and peers.
Typically, they only encounter other friends who are Deaf/hard of hearing (only a few in mainstream programs) at school as well. Being able to identify with friends and other adults who are Deaf/hard of hearing is important to their social emotional development. It allows them the opportunity to see a positive and hopeful perspective from another Deaf/hard of hearing person's point of view living in a hearing world.
My Project
My DonorsChoose request will provide my students with more books and dolls that portray Deaf/hard of hearing characters. Because each of my students’ hearing journey is different, stories and model representations should reflect their varied experiences (the use of sign language, the wearing of hearing aids or the use of cochlear implants). Literary texts and the use of dolls/characters to model differences would help them identify their deafness as a "gain" rather than a "loss".
When children are empowered by their differences, they can celebrate their "ability" rather than focus on a "disability".
Exploring exceptionalities through literature, modeling and role playing helps students feel better connected to the world around them and embrace their individuality with confidence and ease. My goal is to provide such exploration opportunities for my Deaf/hard of hearing students.
