My students were absolutely thrilled when they walked in and saw it! On the first day, each student got a turn using it and we talked about how the swing can help us calm our bodies down when we have too much energy or we are upset. \r\n\r\nHaving access to this swing has been a useful intervention for preventing meltdowns, as we are able to provide students with calming sensory input before they get overwhelmed. Because it is so popular, it has also been a useful tool for teaching turn taking, waiting, and sharing. It has also been beneficial for practicing important core vocabulary such as \"more\", \"want\", \"all done\", etc. for our students with limited communication skills. In the upcoming year, it will serve as a way to provide sensory input for those same needs, as well as supporting students with dual sensory impairments (vision and hearing impaired) to gain sensory input in ways that are accessible to them. By utilizing the books in this set alongside the plushies and teaching materials, my students have begun to show a deeper understanding of their own emotions and are utilizing more self-regulation strategies. We focus on one emotion each week and read the corresponding book. We utilize the matching plushies to increase engagement and keep students interested. We have the emotions poster hung up in our Calm Down Corner and we listen to the Little Spot of Feelings songs daily. I even have one student who has started pointing out each feeling on the poster as she hears it in the song!\r\n\r\nThe students look forward to hearing the book each day, and having this set has made planning my social skills instruction so much easier. We will continue to use this set for years to come and students will benefit by being able to identify and process their emotions in healthy and safe ways.
