Dark Secrets: Bullying and Abuse

My students need 25 copies of "Bullying in Schools" from AKJ Books and 45 books from the Urban Underground series.

My Students

Middle schools are full of social drama. My students will be drawn into the Urban Underground books for reluctant teen readers. These fast-paced titles, with themes of abuse, bullying, and dark secrets, will provoke thoughts and discussions.

My urban middle school students, many of them overage, begin the year reading years below grade level.

We work hard in our mixed grade Language Arts classroom, reading and writing every day, to strengthen literacy skills and prepare for high school success. An appealing classroom library is a key ingredient in growing avid readers. Many of my students are just beginning to read chapter books at home on their own time. As they discover a first hot read and then pass it on to a friend, they are beginning to see themselves as readers. I want to keep this trend going with a new collection of gritty urban fiction.

My Project

I am requesting 2 or 3 copies of 20 titles from the Urban Underground series. These books will be available for home checkout. Students will be able to read books with a partner or alone, exploring some of the social drama themes that are present in our daily school life. In addition, I am requesting 25 copies of Bullying in Schools by AKJ Books. Students will be able to take a copy home to read and annotate as we explore the issue of bullying together. Bullying in Schools will provide a shared reading experience and common point of reference as students respond in writing to books from the Urban Underground series.

The right book can turn even the most reluctant reader into a book lover.

Please help me provide my students with a just-right book for everyone as we learn to deal with our own dark secrets.
