These texts introduce key academic skills (identifying main ideas, interpreting graphs, noticing text structure, and learning content-area vocabulary) and are, most importantly, accessible for students who are still developing foundational English. The books pair images with simple (but academic!) text which allows the students to practice decoding, to build vocabulary, and to strengthen reading stamina without feeling overwhelmed or \"babyed.\" \r\n\r\nThese readers let my emergent bilingual students grow their English and their science knowledge at the same time, ensuring that they don't fall behind in STEM while building language proficiency. They're reading real science, and they know it.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and social. Students read in pairs, discuss new vocabulary, and practice using scientific terms in short speaking and writing tasks. Ali, a refugee from Afghanistan, in particular, has enjoyed these additions to our library. He is methodically working his way through the entire National Geographic series. He started at Level 1, moved into Level 2, and if he continues at this pace, he'll make it to Level 3 before the year is out. Often students venture from one genre to another - Ali has found his preferred genre in this science series.
