Dangerous And Daring Expository Writing

My students need 5 copies of the very good and very exciting "Dangerous & Daring" series of books. These books will be used to make my students OUTSTANDING expository writers.

Mr. Fox Beaumont Middle School
Portland, OR Grades 6-8

How To Teach Students Expository Writing. Step One: Know your students. Ask yourself the following questions: -Are they from a diverse set of backgrounds (religious, ethnic, economic, primary language, family units, etc.)? -Do they have mixed levels of self-motivation, interest in learning, and support at home? -In spite of their mixed levels in the previous questions are they all genuinely good kids who want to demonstrate how smart and confident they are? -Will they learn best if you can engage their whole body and mind in an activity that excites them? If you can answer yes to all of these questions then you are teaching in Mr. F's classroom. STEP TWO: Create the Hook Find amazing examples of expository writing so students can see what good expository writing looks like. Books like "The Dangerous Book for Boys" and "The Daring Book for Girls" are excellent; they have a variety of examples that teach kids how to have fun without technology. (Planning a camp-out, jump rope, building a soap-box derby car, this is "classic" 1950s "gosh, golly, this sure is swell" stuff). Put the students in groups where they'll read through these books and select one activity to teach the rest of the class. This way, they will learn exactly how expository writing works. They will read it, learn what it teaches them, and then do it! Plus, by starting with a group, they'll have safety in numbers as they get comfortable with the style. PLUS! They get to teach their peers. PLUS PLUS! They get to teach them really cool things that don't require a television or computer! STEP THREE: The Writing Now students will get to write their own expository pieces teaching others something "Dangerous & Daring" which they are an expert at (the perfect lay-up, braiding hair, building a birdhouse). After they've written and revised, it'll be time to publish! As a class we'll create our own Dangerous/Daring book. STEP FOUR: The Final Boost of Self-Esteem With our newly published class book we'll repeat step two. Students will use each others' writing to create a demonstration. STEP FIVE: Be Thankful When everything is said and done the students and I will take a moment to remember that all of this fun (oh yeah, and learning) was made possible thanks to the generosity of a stranger... are you the one we'll be thinking of? Are you the one who will make this possible?
