Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work for a charter school in the Salt Lake City area, which is one of the hardest hit areas in Utah with COVID-19. My students are all hard workers and they have started to develop a growth mindset that by working together and showing grit, they can all be successful in their own ways. It hasn't been easy to get students to this point, though due to the global pandemic.

I am so proud of my students' abilities to adapt and overcome challenges and want to create as many opportunities for growth in the classroom as possible, while keeping them healthy and safe.

In my class of 17, almost half are English Language Learners and that includes students that speak almost no English at this time. My students also have not known what a "normal" year of school looks like since kindergarten. My students have seriously taught me so much about how we are all capable of doing hard things as long as we have support and believe in ourselves.

My Project

With the recent, almost two-year-long pandemic, students have had to overcome many obstacles and learn to be resilient in a world where education is constantly needing to pivot to make learning safe and effective for all students.

As a result, my third graders have not had a "normal" year of school since kindergarten.

Not only are we expecting them to learn and make progress as normal, but our school has adopted both a new ELA and Math curriculum for the 2021-2022 school year.

I have found that in order to best support the science integrated into our ELA curriculum that we could use some more materials to create hands-on learning opportunities. The science games on my list will provide enriched learning to support the scientific information they are learning in our ELA curriculum in a game-based method that will be engaging and fun.

I have also found the need to help support my high population of English Language Learners, some of whom speak little to no English at the time. The sentence building and word building activities will provide the opportunity for my language students to have our phonics and sentence instruction supplemented and build English language skills simultaneously. These materials can be used in small-group instruction or even one-on-one as needed and allow for hands-on manipulation of the learning materials used in order to provide more opportunities for learning.

The storage trays I am requesting will allow students to keep new curriculum materials in their desks. Their desks are a wire-basket type desk and not entirely enclosed, so they need a place to keep smaller curriculum objects without them falling out and getting lost.
